The 12-Ton Gauntlet class yacht Guiding Light is one of the few boats that have
totally cleared up at Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Owner Roy Boughton
found and restored the yacht, then sailed her solo across the Atlantic to
race in 2010, winning her class, not to mention the concours – and the
prize for the best story of the event, for his crossing. She was built by
Berthon in 1936 to an HG May design and was until the unexplained
death of Roy Boughton, who went missing at sea in the Caribbean
in November 2018, in tip top condition. Since then there has
been some ingress of water through the keel, and Guiding
Light now, according to his sister Lynne, “desperately
needs someone to love her as much as Roy did, as the
cost of repairs is now rising.”

SINLOO OF ARKLOW

Irish pedigree

The 31ft sloop Sinloo of Arklow built by Tyrrels of
Arklow in 1954, is believed to have been originally
owned by the father of international off shore racer Fred
Kinmonth, and cruised off west Cork by Fred himself in
the 1960s. Her current owner Stephen Barry had Sinloo
completely refurbished by Paddy Goodbody of Wicklow
Marine Services in the 1990s. Stephen then sailed her
out of Royal St George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire for
a number of years. She has been stored on a trailer for
the past few years and is now for sale following
Stephen’s death in 2018. According to Stephen’s brother
Kevin, the yacht is “in excellent condition, with the
interior completely stripped and ready for reassembly.”
She is fi tted with a Saab 10hp and is complete with sails,
lifeeraft, dingy etc, all in good order.
