Use new nofollow options
For 15years or so, Google has
encouragedwebmasters to add

rel=”nofollow”to links they
don’twant to endorse, such as
sponsored information where
you’vereceived a paymentfor
adding a link.To help it further
differentiate links in the future,
Google nowrecognises
rel=”sponsored”, whichyou
can use specificallyfor links
where cash has changed hands,
andrel=”ugc”(User Generated
Content),for links that others
might have addedto your site,
such as in acomment.You don’t
needto go back and change
existing ‘nofollow’ tags, juststart
afresh with new links.For more

Q
Is it necessary to have asecure
(https) websitenow that Google
calls out regularsites as being
potentially unsafe?
Tim Todd, via email
A
Froma security point of view, you
only need‘https’ if you’re collecting
information fromsomeone,such as
asking themto fill out a formor complete a
shopping transaction. AnSSL certificate
automatically encrypts information sent
fromyour visi tor’s browser to your site, so
anyone intercepting the datawon’t be able
to unscramble it. If you don’t have forms or
shops, your site is perfectly safe without
SSL. Annoyingly, however, Google still flags
it up as‘Not
secure’, which
may leave you
wanting to
upgrade anyway.
