any rapid hold changes. Luckily
the ATACR is also available in 2nd
focal plane, MOA adjustments
and with their simple but
superb MOAR and NP-R2 MOA
increment reticles. That would be
my choice for sure, but then I am
old and set in my ways...
The ATACR is also available
in a 1-8x24, 4-16x42 and
50mm, and 5-25x56mm in
a mix of first and second
focal planes, MOA and Mil
adjustments etc.
Optically the ATACR is superb,
and the Fluorite ED glass makes
the image really pop. The field
of view is huge, the eye box
very non critical and the eye
relief ample - making rapid
target acquisition easy. The low
light performance was right
up there with the very best I’ve
seen as well, so Nightforce have
really put it all together with
this optical system. It is a huge
improvement over the NXS.
Mechanically everything was
on the money adjustment
value and subtension wise,
but I really expected nothing
less from this model as this has
always been Nightforce’s forte.
The Digillum reticle illumination
is activated by pressing the
centre of the side focus knob
and works well, although it
is a little slow to change the
brightness level as you have to
shuttle through all the settings
to get to the one you want. You
can choose either red or green
illumination.
We mounted the ATACR on
the Ruger LRT 300 Win Mag
and took it tahr hunting,
as you’ll have read about
in the previous testfire. It
performed superbly – except
for the carrying bit – and
that is where the major
drawback of the ATACR
lies. At 39.3ozs/1113gms,
it is very heavy, due
to the very heavy wall
construction to make it
literally bullet proof! And
you don’t get these sort of
top of the line optics cheaply
- the ATACR is definitely up
there price wise, in fact it is
the most expensive scope I’ve
ever had the pleasure of using
(and don’t get me wrong, it
certainly was a pleasure!) At
this weight and this price,
it is going to have a fairly
small niche market here in
New Zealand. But if you have
the need for a scope of this
type, and can afford it, then
the ATACR will not let you
down! And if your budget
doesn’t quite run to an
ATACR, there is the SHV
and NXS lines that are
still very nice reliable
scopes at a much more
user friendly price point - and weight.
RRP - Mil-C $6,811,
Mil-XT $7,077.
