FASTEST MARATHON
(FEMALE, WOMEN‑ONLY RACE)
On 23 Apr 2017, Mary Keitany (KEN) won her third
London Marathon title, in 2 hr 17 min 1 sec. This
was the fastest time in a women-only marathon
by 41 sec, and second only to Paula Radcliffe
(UK), whose fastest marathon (female) of 2 hr
15 min 25 sec in 2003 used male pacemakers.

Most Olympic marathon medals
won by a country
Between 1904 and 2016, the USA won 13 Olympic
medals in the marathon. They dominated early
editions of the men’s event, winning seven
medals by 1924 – including a clean sweep at
St Louis 1904. But in recent years Kenya and
Ethiopia have been dominant in the road race,
and at Rio 2016 Kenya briefly equalled the USA’s
tally of 12 medals when Eliud Kipchoge took gold

  • only for Galen Rupp (USA) to cross the line in
bronze-medal position just 1 min 21 sec later.
In doing so, Rupp became only the third US man
to win a medal in the marathon since 1924.

First triplets to compete
in the Olympic marathon
Identical sisters Lily, Leila and Liina Luik –
the “Trio to Rio” – competed in the
2016 Olympic marathon for Estonia.
It was Lily who finished first, coming
home in 97th place.

Fastest race walk 50 km (female)
On 15 Jan 2017, Inês Henriques (PRT)
won the Portuguese Race Walking
Championships in Porto de Mos in
4 hr 8 min 26 sec. This was the first official
IAAF women’s world record in this discipline.

MOST WHEELCHAIR
LONDON MARATHON WINS (MALE)
David Weir (UK) won his seventh men’s
wheelchair London Marathon title on 23 Apr 2017,
winning in 1 hr 3 1 min 6 sec. He had previously
triumphed in 2002, 2006–08 and 2011–12. Weir’s
seventh victory took him one clear of Dame Tanni
Grey-Thompson (UK), earning him the most
overall wheelchair London Marathon wins.

Most Ultra-Trail Mt Fuji podiums
by an individual
Fernanda Maciel (BRA) has finished in the top
three of the Japanese ultramarathon three
times: runner-up in both 2014 and 2015, she
finally won in 2016. The Ultra-Trail Mt Fuji is
run over a 165-km (102.5-mi) course with a
46 - hr time limit.

Most wins of the Berlin Inline Skating
Marathon (male)
Skater Bart Swings (BEL) won the Berlin Inline
Skating Marathon in four consecutive years
from 2013 to 2016.
Swings was also responsible for the fastest
time to complete the Berlin Inline Skating
Marathon – 56 min 49 sec, on 26 Sep 2015.

ELIUD KIPCHOGE
On 6 May 2017, Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) completed
Nike’s “Breaking2” marathon challenge in 2 hr
25 sec at the Monza Grand Prix circuit in Italy.
Although Kipchoge’s time was faster than Dennis
Kimetto’s (KEN) fastest marathon (male) – 2 hr
2 min 57 sec – it did not count as an official IAAF
record owing to the use of in-out pacemakers.
