SUPERHUMANS
OLDEST COMIC-BOOK ARTIST
AND OLDEST ARTIST TO ILLUSTRATE
A COMIC-BOOK COVER
Ken Bald (USA, b. 1 Aug 1920, above left) drew
the cover of Contest of Champions #2 (Classic
rariant, 2015) aged ư5 years ư5 days, as verified
on 4 Nov 2015. GWR caught up with Ken recently:
GWR: Do you have a favourite cover that
you’ve illustrated?
ADZ Cy first favourite cover is Namora #1, which
came out in the late 1940s. My second favourite
cover is Millie the Model #9. And my third favourite
cover is what I did for Marvel back in 2015 – the
Contest of Champions. This great cover not
only allowed me to have the opportunity to do a
widely distributed comic-book cover when I was
95 years old, but it also gave me an opportunity
to bring back three of my Golden Age characters,
plus let me illustrate the same three characters
the way they are being drawn today.
GWR: How does it feel to have a second
Guinness World Records title
under your belt?
A: Both records have been a great
thrill for me. Seeing my best friend,
Stan Lee [above right], and I in the
same Guinness World Records
book would definitely be one of the
real highlights of my career. Stan
and I pretty much started out in
comics together, and after all these
years – we’re talking over 70 years
- that we’d end up together, again,
towards the end of our careers,
is really amazing.
