Jeremiah 21-36: A Translation

  1. A Cutting in Lebanon South (22:6-9)
22 6 For thus said Yahweh concerning the house of the king of Judah:
    Gilead you are to me
    the top of Lebanon
But I will surely make you a wilderness
    cities that are uninhabited

(^7) So I am sanctifying destroyers against you
each person with his axes
And they will cut down your choicest cedars
and fell them upon the fire.
5
(^8) And many nations will pass by this city, and they will say each person to his fel-
low, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this great city?'^9 And they will say, 'Because
they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God and worshiped other gods
and served them.'

  1. Lament Jehoahaz, Not Josiah! (22:10-12)
22 10 Weep not for the dead
    and condole not for him
weep continually for him who goes away
Because he will not return again
and not see the land of his birth.

(^11) For thus said Yahweh to Shallum son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned in
place of Josiah his father, who departed from this place:
He will not return there again.^12 For in the place where they exiled him, he
will die, and this land he will not see again.

  1. A King with an Edifice Complex (22:13-17)
22 13 Woe to him who builds his house without righteousness
and his upper rooms without justice
He makes his fellow serve for nothing
his wages he does not give to him

(^14) Who says, 'I will build for myself a house of dimensions
with spacious upper rooms'
And he frames for himself windows
and panels in cedar
and paints in vermilion
(^15) Are you a king because you compete in cedar?
Your father-Did not he eat and drink
and do justice and righteousness?
