30 Jeremiah 21-36: A Translation

Take these deeds-this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed-and
you shall put them in an earthenware jar in order that they may last many
days.

(^15) For thus said Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel:
Again houses and fields and vineyards shall be bought in this land.

  1. Just Why Did I Buy This Field? (32:16-25)

(^16) Then I prayed to Yahweh after I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch
son of Neriah:^17 Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look, you, you have made the heavens and
the earth with your great strength and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is
too difficult for you,^18 who shows steadfast love to thousands but who repays the
iniquity of the fathers into the lap of their children after them, the great God,
the mighty, Yahweh of hosts is his name,^19 great in counsel and mighty in deed,
so that your eyes are open upon all the ways of humanity's children, to give to
each person according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings;^20 so
that you have shown signs and wonders, in the land of Egypt-up to this day-
and in Israel and among humankind, and you made for yourself a name, as at
this day.^21 And you brought your people Israel out from the land of Egypt with
signs and with wonders and with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm
and with great terror;^22 and you gave to them this land that you swore to their
fathers to give to them, a land flowing with milk and honey.^23 And they came in
and took possession of it, but they did not obey your voice and in your law did
not walk; everything that you commanded them to do, they did not do, so you
made them meet up with all this evil.^24 Look, the siege ramps have come to the
city to take it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who
are fighting against it, because of the sword and the famine and the pestilence;
and what you have spoken has happened. So look, you are watching!^25 Yet you,
you have said to me, 0 Lord Yahweh, 'Buy for yourself the field with silver and
call for witnesses,' but the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans!

  1. Yahweh's Promised Judgment (32:26-35)
    a) Is Anything Too Difficult for Me? (32:26-29)

(^26) And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah: (^27) 'Look I am Yahweh, God of all
flesh. Is anything too difficult for me?'
(^28) Therefore thus said Yahweh:
Look I am giving this city into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the
hand of Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, and he shall take it.^29 And the
Chaldeans who are fighting against this city shall come in and set this city
on fire and burn it, including the houses on whose roofs they burned in-
cense to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, in order to pro-
voke me to anger.
