Just like other halogens, fluoride may act as a trigger in inducing thyroid
cell death and inflammation, leading to the development of thyroiditis/
autoimmune thyroiditis.

The United States is one of the only countries that adds fluoride to its
water system. Almost all (97 percent) European countries have rejected
water fluoridation due to the toxicity associated with it. Austria, France,
Germany, Spain, and Switzerland, however, do allow the addition of
fluoride to salt.

Some people have reported improvement in thyroid symptoms and thy-
roid function tests after removing fluoride from their lifestyle.

Common sources of fluoride:

• Supplements (check labels)

• Bottled beverages

• Toothpaste

• Black tea

• Red tea

• Canned food items

• Black/red rock salt

• Chewing tobacco

• Medications
