Heavy Metals

Heavy metals may also interfere with thyroid function. Mercury fillings in
particular have been found problematic in those with Hashimoto’s. As mer-
cury is a metal that vaporizes when heated, the heat generated from the fric-
tion of chewing causes it to be released into circulation. In those who are
sensitive to mercury, removal of mercury fillings (by a specialized holistic
dentist) has been associated with a reduction in TPO antibodies.

Additional sources of mercury are found in fish. Tuna contains a lot of
mercury and should be avoided, while anchovies, salmon, flounder, and
whitefish may be enjoyed up to twice a week.

Other metals can also leach into our bodies. The most common, alu-
minum is present in antiperspirants and some cooking pans. Scratched
nonstick pans are a source of leaks. Stainless steel cookware is recom-
mended instead.
