Next, you can either write out a problem list of all the things you are un-
dergoing or use the journals, quizzes, and tracking tools at thyroidphar-
macist.com/guide to track your progress.
This will help you determine which types of tests and interventions may
be helpful to implement.
The approach to healing is fourfold: diet, supplements, lifestyle changes,
and medications when indicated.
You Are Unique
Bio-individuality is the concept that everyone is biologically unique—or to
put it plainly, we’re all different. Thus it is possible some strategies that work
for one person may make another person worse. It is important to pay careful
attention and keep track of your own progress in your healing journey.
How Will You Know a Change Is an Improvement?
Journaling, testing, and tracking your symptoms will help you determine
if your healing journey is heading in the right direction.
Balancing Measures
As you may notice, many of the supplements that can be helpful for
adrenals (astragalus, DHEA, licorice root) and thyroid (selenium, glu-
tathione) may actually increase the Th1 branch, perpetuating immune
imbalance.
Perhaps an immune imbalance depletes these nutrients, causing thyroid
and adrenal dysfunction, and once the nutrients are depleted, the overac-
tive branch gets burned out. By supporting the thyroid and adrenals, we
may end up inadvertently supporting the overactive arm as well.
Candida and fungal infections shift the immune system toward produc-
ing more Th2 cells. Viruses and gram-negative bacteria produce more
Th1 cells. Getting rid of a Candida or parasitic infection may shift the
immune system to Th1 if there is a chronic viral infection or gram-nega-
tive bacteria are present.
It is important to keep this balance in mind while attempting to restore one
part of the system without worsening another part. If antibodies worsen or
new symptoms develop suggestive of a Th1 dominance, it may be helpful
to start some Th2-stimulating substances to help restore the balance.
