Hampshire Life: February 2019 (^) 119
Favourite place?
Steve says: “I love coming up
the stairs and looking at the
views. I get a kick out of that
every morning and it doesn’t
matter what the weather is
doing.”
Siriol is undecided: “I love
my studio, the garden and the
kitchen as it’s a lovely space to
work in with fantastic views, but
that corner [in the family area]
looking out over the gardens
is my favourite spot, although I
don’t sit there often enough.”
Best Purchase?
Steve reflects: “For me it is
some of the materials used
in the house’s construction –
particularly the Purbeck stone.
It makes a feature of the lower
part of the back of the house.
I worried about it from the
point of view of cost, but it is
something I will never regret.”
Siriol is definite: “The central
vacuum system which was
installed when the house was
built – it’s light and quick and
fantastic for hard floors, and
there’s a lot of floor here!”
What couldn’t you live
without?
Siriol confesses: “Underfloor
heating. There are no radiators
which frees up wall space and
you get a lovely warmth right
through the house.”
Tip for someone doing a
similar project?
Steve jokes: “Don’t do it! Grand
Designs wanted to film this
project, but we didn’t fit in
with their filming schedule.
In retrospect I am pleased
because things go awry as
they always do – although we
were a finalist in Grand Designs’
magazine competition.
“I always say to clients, make
sure you get it all properly
costed before you start. Don’t
launch into the build as soon
as planning permission comes
through. Resolve as many
things as possible before you
start. It is essential to have
bathroom and kitchen plans in
advance. Any ‘extras’, even an
additional light socket, can be
expensive.”
