Asana – March 2017

In the physical practice of yoga, some poses
look easily achievable but are actually quite
demanding physically and mentally. Parivrtta
Baddha Trikonasana is a good example. Since
Trikonasana or Triangle pose is part of a regular
asana class nowadays, some practitioners ask:
can a small twist and arm locking cause injury to
a practitioner? The answer is YES.

Since this pose activates the Manipuraha Chakra,
it easily creates fire in the body, making a
practitioner excited and “hungry” for more – for
more challenging poses, a deeper inhalation and
exhalation of the breath, and a mental appetite
that needs to be satisfied. When not controlled or

balanced, this can lead to physical injury and/or
an overactive mind.

This fire within is important for keeping the body

healthy, but in everything that we are and do,
balance is essential. Do physical practice, but also
remember to do mental/emotional practice. Keep
the mind and body in sync with each other for a
more fulfilling experience. Use this opportunity
to include silent meditation in the asana and
pranayama practice.

Try new posed by learning from a qualified and
proficient teacher. Do not be afraid to modify
the practice to suit your needs; just keep core
principles and injury-prevention tips in mind.
