TREE POSE
(VRKSASANA)
Stand in Tadasana (Mountain
Pose) at the top of your yoga
mat. On an inhalation, lift
your right foot off the floor
and place it on the inside of
your left leg—at the top of the
thigh, if possible, or below the
knee (avoid pressing into the
knee directly). Center your
weight on the left leg, press-
ing evenly through the left
foot. Raise your arms over-
head. Hold for 8–10 breaths;
repeat on other side.

Your legs are the foundation of
many yoga poses. And standing
balancing poses, for instance,
teach us to sway with what is in
our bodies, our surroundings, and
our minds. They are reminders
that strength must be tempered
with flexibility in order to build a
resilient foundation. Take a cue
from this photo, and practice with
a smile as you find your roots.
