An inspiring issue
I’ve been practising yoga for five years now, but I’ll admit that lately
I’d been becoming a little bit disillusioned with the yoga world.
After moving to a new area, most of the local studios I’d tried had
been competitive and draining, while all the yoga-related images in
my social media feeds were beautiful, sculpted and flexible women
who I struggled to identify with any more.
When not on the mat, I work with women and families from
refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, developing programs to
link them in with health providers, English classes and training
opportunities. As part of trying to introduce a yoga class for some
of our women who are unable to afford paid classes, I have spent
weeks emailing studios from Brisbane to Byron Bay, trying to
source volunteer teachers and old or used mats. After only getting
one reply from one very friendly studio who was unfortunately
unable to help, a friend suggested that I do my own teacher
training, so I could teach in my spare time.
On a whim, I bought the April issue of Yoga Journal that day.
While usually I wistfully eye the teacher training advertisements
before hurriedly moving on, this month I paid more attention.
Your story on PTSD, “Healing Minds”, reminded me of why
I so badly wanted to include yoga in the work I do in the first place,
and encouraged me to keep trying to make it happen. The article
“Live Your Dream” made me think about how I could actually get
qualified myself, rather than automatically making excuses on the
basis of the cost of the qualification. And finally, your interview
with Maty Ezraty inspired me to believe in the power of therapeutic
and supportive yoga, rather than being intimidated by the
amazingly athletic teachers that frequently represent the yoga
world. Thank you for such an empowering issue this month –
I think you’ve given me the push I needed to make it happen!
BRIONY HADFIELD
PS. Is there any chance you could do an article on Karma yoga in
the future? I have often heard about examples of non-profit yoga
overseas, but not so much here at home!
Ed’s reply: Wow, Briony – we are so glad to have inspired you, especially
since it’s for such an important cause! Best of luck to you.
Thanks for sharing
Today I received an amazing gift from Australia:) Thank you so much
–I cannot express how grateful I am. I studied photography and visual
arts in Perth for a year, so I love Australia. I call it “the Big Land”.
ANJA HUMLJAN
We were so excited to feature your photos, Anja. We hope we did them
justice. Such beautiful images. Love your work!
