Things to look for when selecting a YTT course, By Anne-Marie Newland

Finding the right course for you

I

t will be no surprise to you if you have been searching for
courses that it can be a bit of a minefield. There are many
schools, organisations and individuals who are asking you
to consider them and you can easily become overwhelmed.
Start with a teacher you admire, respect and feel you want to
emulate first. After all, he or she will be able to give you some good
advice and guidance based on their own experiences.
However, even your own teacher may find this challenging. Giving
advice to another can feel like a huge responsibility. The teachers
are many and the ways endless.
Yoga has changed its goal posts over the many years I have
been teaching - and not all for the good. It is more commercial

than chocolate, and a fashion statement for some; a life-changer
for you but can also be an excuse for others. Either way, it is seen
everywhere in magazines and TV adverts, practiced by the stars and
jumped on by mavericks. Yes, it’s a minefield indeed. As a teacher
for 42 years and a trainer for 20, here are some of the key points to
consider when taking the leap into becoming a yoga teacher.

1

Find a course that has been accredited by one or more
reputable body.

2

Ensure that accreditation results in a qualification and one you
can use to teach in the UK and/or abroad.
