One of the most underrated
components of preparing
ourselves for hard training and
sport fights or real-life violence
is the ‘inside game’ — that
is, developing our combative
mindset, which includes:
đƫFocusing, concentrating
and expanding our
attention span
đƫOvercoming destructive
emotions, minimising
negative internal dialogue
and self-talk
đƫSelf-control, including ego
and excitation/arousal
control and attaining
mental balance
đƫRelaxation (learning how
to turn off) and breathing
exercises
đƫVisualisation and guided
mental imagery.
Combat is not just physical,
it’s psychological too. It’s often
surprising that many students
who are often quite capable
in physically demanding
fitness and pad-work sessions,
technical training and even
sparring can cope poorly
when it comes to scenario
simulations and role playing,
as this can make things ‘real’.

do on your own or with a
