Y

ou have just finished your teacher
training and can’t wait to start
real teaching. And as any teacher
will tell you, the quickest way
to learn is on the job. Teaching
experience is vitally important to gain
confidence and grow your own personal style.
However, just as important in your career as a
teacher is your personal development in terms
of continuing education.
Good training courses often support their
students both during and after their training.
The support during the training may be
sitting in on classes, assisting the teacher,
and even taking small teaching parts in a
real studio environment.
Post course support can be offering you
classes to teach in the studio, providing
you with a mentor to help you in taking
that first big step, and offering a range of
workshops and further trainings. Remember,
what you learned in your teacher training
is only the first step. Yoga is a vast subject
and hopefully your training will have inspired
you to learn more. You may discover during
your training that certain areas particularly
interest you. Follow your instincts and
carefully nurture your interests. This could
be your future career.
For example, during your training you
might find that anatomy really fascinates
you, and so want to learn more in depth. Or

Teaching the teachers

your course may have touched on adjusting
and you would like to gain more experience.
Many graduates are drawn to taking further
trainings, especially vocational type courses
like children’s yoga and pregnancy yoga.
Another very popular area is in mindfulness,
which is increasingly being used in a wide
range of environments to help deal with the
stresses of modern life.
What is often lacking are courses and
specialisations specifically for teachers. If
you were an engineer or an architect or
a lawyer, you would not expect to attend
further training courses also attended by the
public. There is a great need for workshops
just for teachers. Unlike workshops open
to the public, teacher workshops address
issues which are relevant, and can focus on
presenting information and practical tips
which are very useful for teachers to take
back into their studios. Apart from focused
learning it is a great way for teachers to
network and share ideas. A leading pioneer
in workshops for teachers is Yoga Alliance
Professionals. It has launched mini seminars
complete with study notes, follow-up
material and resources. They are taught by
leading senior teachers with a track record
in their subject.
