Any advice for new yoga teachers just
starting out
“Do not believe anything because it is said
by an authority or if it is said to come from
angels, gods, or from an inspired source.
Believe it only if you have explored it in your
own heart and mind and body and found it
to be true.” – Gautama Buddha
That is one of my favourite quotes. When
we are new teachers, bursting with hunger
and excitement, someone exclaiming, over
zealously and over confidently, ‘Come to me,
I have all the super food,” can be a sticky
thing. Seek out transformational spaces
and communities that encourage you to
explore everything in your own body, your
own heart. Spiritual teachers, even studios,
often demand that we limit ourselves to one
practice or style – “this is the way to the
mountain top!” I am now wary of spaces that
claim exclusive rights to my time, money,
or energy. I say, go try it all. If something or
someone doesn’t resonate, try something
else! There is so much out there, so much
to learn, from so many people. When a
teacher, studio, or community begins to
see themselves as having the perfect way, I
would be extra alert.
