English artist John Harrison (drawninyorkshire.com) enjoys sketching built structures in the
wider landscape, exploring the contrast between what’s man-made and what’s natural. His
sketch, The Old Stubble, Staithes, shows the footpath from a car park at the top of this
seaside village in North Yorkshire. “The highlight of my artistic year is the annual Festival
of Arts and Heritage that takes place in Staithes,” Harrison says. “About 130 artists
participate in the three-day event, taking part in pop-up galleries in the quirky
fi shermen’s cottages. I chose to pare down the color in my sketch, part of a
recent effort to simplify my style, while still imparting a sense of place.”YOUR TURN!
