Stories from around the weird and
wonderful world of yoga
Planet yoga
The force awakens
It had to happen: a Star Wars themed
yoga class. The Star Wars Yoga
Experience in Des Moines, Iowa, was the
ideal place for all Jedis in the making
(and maybe even for those more
predisposed to the dark side!). Organisers
equipped each yogi participant with a
lightsaber before teaching “the ways of
the Jedi Knight: learning to be present,
focus, balance and using the Force for
good,” the Des Moines Register reported.
Afterwards, the event also included a
Star Wars photo booth and Jedi-themed
drinks. Sounds out of this world to us!
Fast love
NASCAR racing driver Danica Patrick says
yoga sharpens her skills on the track.
The 35-year-old has long been a fan of
yoga for staying healthy and in shape
for racing, alongside cardio and weight
training, but she also reckons it helps
improve her performance on the race
track. “The most common (thing it helps
with) is breathing and recognising how
the breath controls everything, and so if
you get nervous or anxious or gripping
the wheel too tight, it’s pretty automatic
for me to just take deep breaths to calm
down,” she told For The Win.
Stress relief
You know it, we know it, but now the
message seems to be catching on: yoga
is a great way to fight stress and boost
mental health. In a recent BBC special
on mental health (Trust Me I’m A Doctor)
various test groups took part in yoga
and other activities to control their stress
levels. The findings showed that yoga, as
well as mindfulness and gardening, were
all great ways to boost your overall mental
health. At a time when mental health is so
high on the agenda (championed by the
likes of HRH Princes William and Harry) it’s
a great advert for all things yoga.
