How did you first get into yoga
I went to my first yoga class by mistake. I
had just moved to a new area in Vancouver
and there was a gym right across the road. I
had never been drawn to gyms but I decided
to sign up for a pass. I spent most of the
time walking around the weight room, not
knowing what to do. On one particular day, I
decided to leave shortly after I had arrived.
The receptionist laughed when he caught
me and suggested that I try a yoga class. It
was just about to start so I had no excuse.
I had no idea what to expect but as soon
as I started moving on the mat, I fell in love
with yoga instantly. I had no idea that yoga
ended with a final relaxation but I was over
the moon when this happened! It was the
perfect end to an amazing hour.

What inspired you in those early days
Everything! It was all new and different so I
was keen to soak it all in. I was amazed by
all of the postures, teachers and styles of
yoga, but most importantly, I loved how I felt

after each class. Naturally, the more we do
something, the more habitual it becomes.
I often encourage myself and my students
to pretend that it’s their first class so they
don’t go into autopilot. That is when usually
we tune out and our mind begins to wander.
Instead, experience downward dog as if
it’s the first time and enjoy the strange, yet
amazing sensation of being inverted.

What does yoga teaching give
you personally
I love seeing the transformation in people,
even within a one hour class. We all
generally arrive to class with baggage

  • holding on to information, stories and
experiences that we’ve gathered earlier that
day or maybe even decades ago. As we get
lost in the moment, these start to fade. We
are left with less tension and stress on the
inside and this becomes very obvious on the
outside. Our face softens and our shoulders
drop. After final relaxation, people look

peaceful and rejuvenated. It is an honour to
be able to provide this space for people to
unwind and recharge in the middle of their
busy days.

How would you describe your own
teaching style
Energising sequences to stretch and
strengthen our bodies mixed with calming
and restorative poses to relax our minds. My
teaching style is light hearted, upbeat and
playful, but also relaxing and nourishing.

Yoga career highs so far
I’ve been very lucky since I’ve been in
London. My days are always different and
that’s what I love. I have had a wide range of
jobs that mostly include teaching people or
small groups private lessons in their home or
office. Some of my highlights include:

n working with London Fashion Week,
teaching the models yoga and meditation

The founder of Disco Yoga, Sarah Hunt

has taught pop stars and the models

at London Fashion Week, when she

was their resident yoga instructor.

Originally from Canada, she’s now

exploring prenatal yoga after learning

she is pregnant. Yoga remains her

constant companion through it all
