Inspiration,

Motivation,

TRANSFORMATION

TAKE A MOMENT.
Get comfortable.
Take a few slow and
easy breaths with
your eyes closed.
Now, do the same
thing but make your
breaths deeper this
time. How would it feel to allow
yourself a handful of these moments
every day? It’s not much to ask but
sometimes it’s just what you need to
keep moving forward. Just a few
moments to check in with yourself.
That’s what motivates many of us to
the practice of yoga. Believe it or not,
most of us aren’t inspired by all of the
human pretzels on social media doing
incredible things with their yoga
bodies on picturesque, tropical
beaches. We’re drawn to those
moments that our practice gives us
to be with our thoughts and feelings.
Although your mind might be racing
a million miles an hour as you perfect
that Vrksasana or struggle through an
attempted meditation, you never
leave a yoga class wishing you’d
stayed home.
Something that really inspired me
in the creation of this edition was our
cover model, Mandy Scotney (read
more about her on page 24). Mandy’s
story is not typical of what you read
in these pages. She wasn’t a teenage
athlete or dancer whose journey to
yoga was an organic addition to an
already active lifestyle. She didn’t find
the practice easy or natural, and she
faced some very human struggles in
her journey to becoming comfortable

in the yoga world. I can relate — in
an industry that’s so saturated with
endless youth and perfect postures,
it’s easy to fall into the not-good-
enoughs. Those perfect postures
and ageless yogis can certainly help
to inspire, but they’re not the be-all
and end-all of yoga.
In our practice, we gain the most
inspiration from our Self, or from those
moments on your mat when you see
some part of your consciousness that
you hadn’t observed before. You learn
and you grow and, most importantly,
you begin to understand your
humanness, which in turn helps you
to understand others’ humanness
and maybe, if you’re lucky, helps
you to become a more loving and
compassionate person in the world.
That’s what keeps us coming back.
So how can we keep that fire burning?
How can we maintain our enthusiasm
in those moments when there are a
million things drawing us away from
ourselves?
I hope this edition helps to answer
some of those questions for you, my
dear yogi friends. Because I truly
believe that yoga is for everybody —
sometimes we just need a little
inspiration.
