Five Things to Do to Make the World a Better Place

  1. Smile at strangers, especially those who don’t look like you.

  2. Volunteer your time somewhere outside your comfort zone.

  3. Treat your family with the same courtesy you extend to others.

  4. Slow down.

  5. Be kind to someone who doesn’t deserve your kindness.

Bio: Nadia Bolz-Weber is a very lucky gal; she gets to be the pastor of
House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado, a Lutheran emerging
church. She is the author of Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian
Television (Seabury, 2008) and of The Sarcastic Lutheran blog.
Nobody really believes she’s an ordained pastor in the ELCA (Evangelical
Lutheran Church of America). Maybe it’s the sleeve tattoos or that she swears
like a truck driver. Either way... she’s fi ne with it. Nadia lives in Denver with
her family of four where she can be found writing bios in the third person and
chasing chickens around the backyard with her kids.

destroyed. It then becomes a tiny superfi cial thing, capable neither of
infl icting deep wounds nor of healing them.
—Søren Kierkegaard

Is it possible, I wonder, to say that it is only when you hear the gos-
pel as a wild and marvelous joke that you really hear it at all? Heard
as anything else, the gospel is the church’s thing, the pastor’s thing,
the lecturer’s thing. Heard as a joke—high and unbidden and ring-
ing with laughter—it can only be God’s thing.
—Frederick Buechner
