Dry Bones?
It’s one of the craziest stories in the Bible. And by crazy, I
mean completely weird and illogical. You’re probably going to
think I’m insane for even telling it. Cray- zee.
A prophet named Ezekiel was walking and talking with
God one day, and God took him to a valley filled with dried- up
bones. Ezekiel stood overlooking the dry, empty, hopeless val-
ley, and God said to him, “Can these bones live?”
It’s a good thing I’m not Ezekiel.
My reply would have been more like, “Um. I don’t know,
maybe... okay... yes, but can we please not do that?
Because... creepy.”
Thankfully, for humanity and Sunday school classes every-
where, Ezekiel was a tad more spiritual than me.
“Sovereign Lord, you alone know” (Ezek. 37:1–3).
Well played.
As a result of Ezekiel’s willingness to follow God, listen, and
obey, God did the miraculous through him. God told Ezekiel
to speak to the valley, to say, “You will come to life!” And it
did. The bones rattled together, they put on flesh, they rose
up and stood as an army— ready to do as God commanded.
From death to life. From dry, empty, and hopeless— the ulti-
mate defeat— to a living, breathing army.

When Everything Changed
Maybe you feel a little dry and defeated. Maybe you need to
see God perform a miracle in the valley of your life. I know I did.
As I sat in my garage, in tears, I asked God to speak to
my dry, empty, and hopeless heart. I needed Him to make me
come alive again— but how?
