Stories from around the weird and
wonderful world of yoga

Drunk yoga
Can’t decide between after work drinks
and the gym? Now you don’t have to.
Introducing Drunk Yoga (yes, it’s really
a thing!) where the yoga and the booze
are flowing in equal measure. Its creator,
Eli Walker, a yoga teacher and actor
originally from Wisconsin, is passionate
about bringing yoga to non-yogis in
unconventional settings. She says a Drunk
Yoga class consists of a brief happy hour,
followed by a fun and beginner-friendly
45-minute vinyasa sequence. She says
the experience is “laughter-filled and
uplifting” and designed “to bring together
community with the understanding that
happiness is health”. Still not sure about it
all? Why not give it a shot?
Wedding bells
Excitement is building for the royal
wedding in May, after Prince Harry
and American actress Meghan Markle
announced their engagement back
in December. Just to remind you:
Meghan’s mum Doria Radlan is a
qualified yoga teacher living in Toronto,
where Meghan is also regularly spotted
attending classes. Both share a passion
for yoga. The soon to-be mother-in-law
could bring a welcome touch of zen to
the often manic world of the monarchy.
With preparations now underway for
the sparkly ceremony at Windsor
Castle, perhaps Doria could start things
off with a few deep breathing exercises
to soothe any big day nerves.
Strictly yoga
Strictly star Debbie MaGee – the widow
and former assistant to magician Paul
Daniels – says yoga helps her to stay
nimble and trim. The 59-year-old recently
credited her practice for her impressive
fitness, which was on clear display in the
popular TV show, Strictly Come Dancing.
One of her teachers, Joelle Pettitt, says
Magee enjoys regular ashtanga classes,
a strong yoga practice in which a set
sequence of movements is performed in
time with the breath. Cited by the Daily
Mail online, she described her student
as “very warm and friendly” and a “very
dedicated, hard-working student”. It’s a
good lesson for all you aspiring dancers
out there: keep up the yoga.
