wait to start yoga. Yoga is for everyone, so
get on your mat as you are right now. You
are ready. It’s never too late to start. There
are so many classes available so there is
certainly something for everyone. If you have
an initial bad experience with yoga don’t let
it stop you from going back.
What do you say to people who think
yoga’s not for them
Yoga is for everybody, regardless of age,
shape, size, ability or gender. There is a form
of yoga for everybody.
What do you do outside of yoga
When I am not doing yoga I am socialising
with family and friends, or travelling and
enjoying life, as well as coaching, blogging or
interviewing for podcasts and for my radio
show ‘The Noble Art of Wellbeing’ on Natural
Health Radio. Finally, I’m also a body positive
activist and honoured to be a Body Image
Movement Global Ambassador (BIMGA).
Incorporating yoga into ordinary life
Being mindful and more present this way
you will be able to appreciate life, helping
you to eliminate operating on autopilot.
Incorporating the mind-body experience
within your everyday life allows you to go
beyond your comfort zone. Yoga not only
allows you to become more flexible in your
body but also in your life. It allows you to
challenge some of your long-held beliefs.
Diversity in yoga
There is still a lack of diversity within
mainstream yoga as there is a perception
of what a ‘yoga body’ looks like, which is
off-putting to potential yogis before even
venturing on the mat. There are so many
individuals wanting to do yoga but feel
afraid to do so for a number of reasons:
the perpetual use of images that are not
diverse; the belief of not having a ‘yoga
body’; needing the right clothing...the list
is endless. However, I am lucky enough to
attend local classes where there is so much
diversity, which reflects the local community
in terms of age, ethnicity, gender, shape
and size. Conversely, I have been in classes
where there is a lack of diversity and there is
no one else who looks like me. I am pleased
to see that some of the yoga studios I
teach at are starting to address this often
controversial issue. I look forward to seeing
the continued evolution of yoga with more
diversity and inclusivity.
