(^121212) YOGA AND TOTAL HEALTH • February 2018YOGA AND TOTAL HEALTH • February 2018
This is the 100th year of existence of
The Yoga Institute. Bringing yoga into
the lives of everyday people, it heralds
the experience of yoga as a way of life.
It has remained true to its vision and
purpose throughout the years. The
Yoga Institute flowed from the vision
of Shri Yogendraji who was initiated
by, and studied with, Paramahamsa
Madhavdasji. As Shri Yogendraji
understood yoga, he wanted to
take the principles and simplify the
practices so that they could be done
by householders. Smt. Sitadevi, his
wife, helped pioneer yoga for women.
As total health, yoga has an effect
on physical, emotional, mental, and
spiritual levels. The approach to yoga
as seen at The Yoga Institute looks
at the deeper side of yoga. The yoga
therapy practiced there can be called
‘Rational Yoga Therapy’.
The Yoga Institute is concerned with
the growth of consciousness in all
Yogic activities. It is concerned with the
main purpose of life. Awareness is the
thread that runs through all the
activities and practices. It is concerned
with yoga for self-development.
The Yoga Institute approaches yoga
teaching from the four Bhavas -
Dharma - self-direction, right conduct;
Jnana - concentration and resulting
knowledge; Vairagya - perfect
objectivity; and Aishvarya - self-
efficacy, power, self-confidence - all
this leads to an integrated yoga state
- Raja Yoga.
‘The Call to Yoga’ is a wonderful
exploration of Dr. Jayadeva and
Hansaji’s life and the history of The
Yoga Institute with just the kind of
details the reader would want. Dr.
Jayadeva was born into and grew up
within the world of The Yoga Institute.
Dr. Jayadeva’s life is dedicated to
Dharma. He is a very evolved being.
Everything that he does comes from
that perspective. A Sanskrit scholar,
one of his first projects was ‘A Survey
of Yoga Literature and Modern Yoga
Centres.’ This laid the foundation for
