ecumenical task in which the broader insights of sacramental and liturgical
theology make possible a confessional explanation of believer's baptism.
This larger task offers the possibility of both deepening Baptist under-
standing of baptism and of providing the wider Church with a theological
explanation which moves beyond debates about exegesis and the inappro-
priateness of historical developments to an exploration of the nature of the
Church itself.
