any of the exhibits at the
1964-’65 World’s Fair in
Queens, New York, gave
attendees a glimpse into the future.
However, one exhibit took spectators
into the distant past. Dinoland,
sponsored by Sinclair Oil Corp., featured
life-size replicas of nine dinosaurs,
including Dino, a 70-foot-long version
of Sinclair’s signature brontosaurus, plus
a Tyrannosaurus rex and a triceratops.
A year after the fair closed, Dinoland
embarked on a multicity tour, stopping
at the Northland Mall in Columbus,
Ohio, 30 miles from my hometown
of Stoutsville. My three brothers and
I just had to see it. (^) •

Living in upstate New York,
my family couldn’t pass up
the opportunity in 1967 to visit
Expo ’ 67 , the World’s Fair in
Montreal, Quebec. My brother
Mark, 14 , looks cool outside the
German Pavilion.

In 1964 my Aunt Sybil, who served on the Alabama
Public Service Commission, got an invitation to the
New York World’s Fair. She asked me, my mom and my
sister, Lynn, to join her. We left Birmingham, stayed at
the New York Hilton, ate at the Four Seasons and saw
a Broadway play. Oh, and the fair was great, too. It was
the trip of a lifetime.
