with— one another is almost out of cultural circulation. Confucius
is a curiosity. Buddha and the radical Jesus: they never were.
But this state cannot last forever. People will see that the war of
each against all leaves everyone wounded. In time, Soul will reas-
sert itself, and we will again make contact with the feeling of that
group on the hill after they had followed Jesus for three days. They
were tired and hungry. They were worried about what they would
eat, how they would survive. But Jesus and the disciples had a few
loaves and a few fi shes, and they gave the crowd everything they pos-
sessed. The crowd responded in kind, with kindness. And behold,
all were fed.
