oga pants are now more
popular than denim. Not quite,
but there’s no doubt that the
yoga clothing market is in the
ascendancy. New research
says the global yoga apparel market is
tipped to grow at a rate of over 6% per
annum over the next few years. The latest
market report from analysts Technavio
covers the period 2019-2023.
It cites the current boom in yoga driving
sales of yoga pants and other related
fashion accessories. Ultimately, one of the
primary factors contributing to the growth
of the yoga clothing market in the UK and
overseas is the growing number of yoga
practitioners, it says.
The report also recognises the increasing
diversity of products on offer, including the
emergence of small boutique brands run
by enthusiastic yogis designing their own
ethical clothing.
The increasing popularity of customised
yoga apparel – from sought after labels to
shiny crystals – is one of the major trends
being witnessed in the global yoga apparel

differentiate the products and improves the
performance of users. Advanced technical
fabrications, innovative design, and product
development position make yoga apparel
premium-priced products. At present,
consumers demand innovative, high-quality

performance-specific apparel for fitness
activities such as yoga.”
Yoga fashion is certainly big business on
the other side of the Atlantic. According to
data from the US Census Bureau, American
imports of stretchy knit pants exceeded
those of blue denim jeans in 2017.
It mirrors a trend towards wearing
‘athleisurewear’ not only by yogis but
among the wider population.
Major ‘stretchy pants’ providers include
Lululemon, Nike and Reebok, though a
small army of niche producers have sought
to cash in on the trend, crafting high-spec
yoga pants with strong eco credentials for
