10 Yoga for Speech-Language Development

to enhance the text and provide idealized representations of the
poses. They do not depict any particular individual’s expression
of the pose. In fact, some children (or adults) may not be able to
achieve the alignment demonstrated in the illustrations, which
are intended to assist the adult in visualizing the form of a yoga
pose, rather than its absolute representation.
This book contains an Appendix of books, card decks, CDs,
DVDs, games, and web-based resources. These resources could be
incorporated into individual or group children’s yoga sessions as
the adult sees fit. The resource list, while extensive, is not exhaustive.
Consequently, some noteworthy children’s yoga resources may
have been unintentionally omitted from the list. In addition, the
authors of this book do not endorse these resources nor have they
obtained any compensation to promote them. Rather, they are
simply provided to assist the adult who wishes to explore them,
and then decide those that they might use.
Throughout this book, the authors highlight logical connections
between yoga and the development of speech, language, and
communication, but currently no direct research evidence
supports the use of yoga to enhance speech-language development
in children. The authors hope that their demonstration  of and
commitment to these connections will encourage a first genera-
tion of research-oriented yoga practitioners and clinicians to
gather preliminary data on these relations.
