master in order to become literate (van Kleeck and Schuele
1987). The practice of yoga is well suited to support both literacy
socialization and metalinguistic awareness. Yoga classes are
language-rich contexts, which can enhance both oral and written
language development. Books can easily be incorporated into
yoga classes, which can increase phonological awareness, alphabet
knowledge, and print awareness. Adults can pair the practice of
yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation with the written
word in order to create experientially rich yoga-literacy activities
that challenge and propel children on their journey to becoming
literate members of society. The resource tables in Appendices
