using Gunze MR Super Clear
to prepare for the decals.
The kit decals are superb
being both thin yet strong and
they react well to Micro Set and
Sol and once dry I sealed them
with another layer of Super
Clear and begin the weathering
process. I used Abteilung 502 oil
paints thinned with White Spirit,
pastel pigments (various greys
and browns). For the chipping
and scuing efect I used enamel
aluminium (Testors this time),
light grey and light sand brown.
I kept the weathering subtle to
depict a plane from the early
days of the Winter War. The
panel lines are very consistent,
delicate but deep enough to
keep the wash. I applied some
iller (mostly pigments) and
inally I painted the exhaust
and gun stains with the H&S
airbrush. I then used Alclad
Clear Smoke and Model Master
Metalizer Exhaust. I sealed all
this with selectively applied
MM Dullcote. The inal touch
was to add the etched pitots,
Ventura tube and make the
interesting antenna array which
for I used Caenis monoilament
this time (painted with MM
steel). The antenna attachment
point on the vertical stabilizer
and the tensioners are made
from some thin copper wire
and the ceramic insulators are
white glue drops painted white.
I simply painted the position
lamps irst chrome silver than
clear red and green which look
good enough in this scale.
CONCLUSION
This was a nice and smooth
build that seems have raised the
bar for small scale limited run
production kits. Apart from the
“exotic” material and the need
for super glue it builds up just
as easily as any modern tooled
mainstream kit. It took me just
two weeks to build - actually
- two of them as I also built
one for SBS as an exhibition
piece and one for myself. Do I
like or recommend this kit? I
now have two more waiting
there turn on my workbench.
Maybe the price is higher
than the mass-produced other
G.50s but the quality speaks for
itself and You can be sure that
You won’t need any aftermarket
parts to build a winner.
This kit is currently
available from the SBS website
at w w w.sbs.com in three
diferent boxings depending on
the markings you wish to build.
