honors the connection the First Nations
have with the horse.”
A highlight for kids is definitely the
midway. There are lots of rides and
carnival games at the Stampede. People
of all ages also have an opportunity to
get up-close and personal with horses,
miniature donkeys, cattle, sheep, and
llamas. The list goes on and on.
Like any festival or fair, food is a
huge draw. The more unique and
unhealthier, the better. Some of the
grub offered over recent years include
a foot-long pizza dog, a glazed donut
grilled cheese sandwich, and Red Velvet
chicken. That’s right: chicken tenders
are dipped in cake batter and then deep
fried. If your tastes are a little more
conventional, you’ll find free pancake
breakfasts each morning throughout the
city, giving the Stampede an even greater
feel of community.
When you visit the Calgary Stampede,
it is like having your own time machine.
Once a year, guests get a peek at
yesteryear and a better understanding of
where the people of Alberta came from
through the connection with the land
and their heritage.
The Calgary Stampede lights up the city each July.
I’m stuffed! A man carries the prizes
he won on the Stampede midway.
