skin, to recover and repair the
skin, and to defend it,” explains
Lancôme’s scientific director
Dr Véronique Delvigne.
HOW CAN WE TELL IF

UNBALANCED? When the
balance of bacteria on our skin
is upset, it compromises the
skin’s protective barrier and
can lead to conditions such
as rosacea, acne and eczema.

less resistant to ageing and

adds Dr Delvigne.

life, with peaks at each of the
major upheavals such as birth,
puberty and menopause,”
she says. For women over 60,
the microbiome becomes
more diverse. “Our study
has demonstrated the skin
microbiome is unbalanced
with age and with pollution.”
HOW CAN WE LOOK AFTER
IT? Gently does it. No harsh
soaps, super-hot water,
aggressive exfoliating,
alcohol and fragrance-laden
skincare. Basically avoid
