irector Gurinder
Chadha has a habit
of creating touching
films – think Bend It Like
Beckham and Viceroy’s
House. And she’s at it again
with Blinded by the Light.
The movie centres around
Javed, a British-Pakastani teen
struggling with the day-to-day
life of being a nerdy student
and an immigrant in the year

  1. Through the power of
    Bruce Springsteen’s music,
    Javed finds the motivation to
    keep pushing through life.

“Springsteen’s a real-life
icon and I think so much of
what he says is so relevant to
today,” explains Gurinder.
“I think that, for me, I
couldn’t have had a better
hero than Bruce Springsteen.
He’s been there for me since
I was 16 and he’s still there
for me today.
“And when we made this
movie, I had no idea that he
was going to have a number-
one album in 12 countries
around the world. He’s still
hot, even today.”

For the English-Indian
filmmaker, the best part of
the entire project was finally
showing Bruce the end
product and what she’d
created with his music.
“The cherry on top was
showing Bruce. I was terribly
nervous. I said, ‘Here’s the
movie and everything I’ve
done. I’ve tried to make it
work for you.’ He watched
and laughed and at the very
end, he hugged and kissed
me and said, ‘Thank you.
I’m blown away.’”
