How to... protect your

garden valuables

The average British garden contains £1,270 worth of items at risk
of theft, such as tools, bikes and BBQs, according to a new study by
MoneySuperMarket. So makesurethey’reprotected.Here’show...

1 Don’t assume
they’re covered
‘Most standard contents
insurance policies include
a small amount of cover
for garden items, but
specifics can vary
wildly – so check
to ensure that your
items are fully
covered,’ says Helen
Chambers, head of
home insurance at
MoneySuperMarket.

2 Lock away
valuables
‘One of the first questions yourinsurance
provider will ask in the event ofa claimis
if your valuables were locked ina shed
or outbuilding, and you’ll oftenbeasked
for proof of forced entry,’ explainsHelen.

IF YOU DO ONE
THING THIS WEEK...
RENEW YOUR
DRIVING LICENCE
ONLINE
British motorists could have missed
out on savings of nearly £5 million
last year by applying for or renewing
their driving licences by post instead
of online, according to DVLA figures.
More than 1.2 million drivers
posted their applications last year,
despite prices being cheaper online.
Renewals cost £17 by post and just
£14 online, while a provisional licence
costs £43 when applying by post,
but only £34 online.

Make sure your
shed has a lock

3 Take extra
care of bikes
And if you have bikes, you need to
be even more careful. ‘Even
if you put bikes inside your
locked shed, lock the
bikes themselves or chain
them to an immovable
object. Some policies
stipulate that you do
this,’ advises Helen.

4 Get
defensive
Do everything you can to deter
criminals. ‘Fitting locks to gates and
having lighting in your garden are good
ways to put off thieves,’ says Helen.
‘And planting shrubs and bushes
along your borders can also deter
unwanted visitors from gaining access
to your garden by climbing over walls.’
