Take height into consideration
when choosing a grandfather
clock. Most are 6-8 feet tall, so
make sure your chosen space can
accommodate a piece that high.

W

hat’s in a name? The
grandfather clock
has graced the halls
of American homes
since 1680 when it
was invented by the British clockmaker, William
Clement. American songwriter Henry Work coined
the term “grandfather clock” in 1875 when he
saw a dormant fl oor clock in a hotel lobby. Upon
inquiry, he was told that the clock had stopped
working after its owner, a beloved grandfather,
had passed away. Inspired, Work composed “My
Grandfather’s Clock,” and the name stuck.
