DIY FAU X SHIPLAP
Make your own money-saving DIY shiplap accent wall.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Measure the length of your wall and decide
on the desired height for each plank.
Elizabeth’s accent wall is at the end of a
hallway, so it was only a few feet in length. For
a larger wall, you can vary the plank length
and create a staggered pattern. Make sure
you also determine where the studs are in the
walls so you can anchor your pieces. - Purchase and cut the plywood. Elizabeth went
the money-saving route by using plywood as
an alternative to the more expensive original
shiplap. In fact, she only spent $20 on her
plywood materials and used leftover paint
from a previous project. When choosing your
plywood, look for pieces that are straight and
have very few knots in the wood.
3. Once you’ve cut the plywood, take the time
to sand the fronts and sides to make them
look smooth and professional.
4. Apply a strong wood glue to the back of the
wood before placing it on the wall.
5. Use a nail gun to nail the top and bottom of
each board along the stud that the board is
over. These nails will securely attach each
plywood plank to the wall, so make sure
your placement is fi nal before this step.
6. Paint your panels with primer, and then
fi nish your faux shiplap wall with an accent
paint color of your choice.
