completes the scene, a DIY project that incorporates some of Maryal’s favorite fabrics from a company called Calico.
- SHOP FOR QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY.
Maryal says that her fi rst rule of thumb for
making her home feel contemporary and
vintage simultaneously is to keep it simple
and be intentional when she shops. Maryal
prefers to purchase a few exceptional pieces
over amassing vintage collections. “I can still
love antiquing and yet not feel like I live in a
mausoleum with all of this dust-collecting
stuff piling up everywhere,” she says.
2. WATCH FOR ART. Maryal also notes
that when she’s vintage hunting, her
eyes are always peeled for art. “Art
never feels dusty or cluttered to me,
so even if it is a really old piece, I think
it can always feel current if you’re
mixing it into a room update,” she says.
3. DON’T BE AFRAID TO DIY. Maryal
says that she’s always game to
make over a vintage piece to give
it a modern look. “That was kind of
the genesis of our blog and where
so much of our passion lies,” she
says. “We always say that the most
important thing for a piece is to have
potential for us and to be realistic
about what that potential is.”
