is Sara’sfavouritespottositduring
winter,whenshehasthefireburningin
thehearth.‘Thequarrytileswereputin
bya previousownerwhowasa member
ofthelocalhistoricalsociety.Theyhad
beensalvagedfroma shipthatwassunk
justoffthecoastandwhichhadbeen
carryinga loadofFrenchtiles,’shesays.
Thebrightsittingroomwithits
taupewallsandsplashesoforangehasa
retrofeel.‘I’vealwayslikedmid-century
pieces,’saysSara.‘I originallystudied
productandfurnituredesignandwas
fascinatedbytheBritishandEuropean
designersofthatera.’Thediningroom
nextdooris theoneareawhereSarahas
leftthebeamstheiroriginaldarkcolour,
which lends a more formal air. The

masterbedroomandanotherbedroom
alsooccupythegroundflooraswellas
thebathroom,withitswhitemetrotiles
androll-topbath.Upstairshasanother
bedroom,anda smallunder-eavesarea
hasbeentransformedintoa guestroom.
Twicea week,Saraspendsupto
fourhourstogettoandfromwork,and
it’sa signofherloveforherhomethat
shefeelsit’sworthit.‘NowI’veadjusted
tothemoreruralwayoflife,I lovemy
houseandthelocation,’shesays.‘This
townis fullofinterestingshops,galleries
andrestaurants,it hassuchanartyvibe.’
Apartfromwantingtomakethe
oddtweakhereandthere,thecottageis
justhowSarawantsit.Somuchso,she
isnotgoingtoactonexistingpermission
toextend.‘I couldenlargethesnugand
corridorif I wanted,’shesays,‘butI
quite like how unusual and cosy it is!’^
