EVENT: KOWEN
IF YOU’RE LOOKING for a
way to develop your skills in a
controlled environment and
have a heap of fun at the same
time, then look no further
than the Kowen Forest Ride
(p84). One of the best
organised trailrides in the
country, Kowen conveniently
takes place just outside
Canberra. It uses an
impressive network of
singletrack and fi re roads and
encompasses some of the best

riding you’ll get in the area.
It caters for beginner riders
too, so if you fi nd something
that’s a little tough, then you’ll
be able to get around it. But
even better is the atmosphere.
With camping, food and drink
for sale and a live band,
Kowen is like one big party. It’s
a great way to meet like-
minded people if you are just
getting into the sport. It’s run
by the DSMRA, so head to
their website, dsmra.asn.au,
for more info.

GET LICENCED!
IF YOUR LOOKING to
get out on the trail then
it’s important you get
licensed. It’s incredible
how many guys and girls
you see out in the bush
who are unlicensed and
riding on unregistered
bikes. While we love to
see people out there
riding, these people are
technically doing the
wrong thing and can
bring negative attention
to our sport. As a result,
riding areas can get shut
and it becomes harder to
run events.
There are plenty of
places to get the training
and documentation you
need around the country.
One such place is

Motorcycle Motion in
Braeside, Victoria. This
mob has been operating
since 1995 and offers a
safe and professional
environment to learn and
get your licence.
It provides bikes and
scooters and, with
accreditation from
VicRoads, it is more than
equipped to give you the
necessary knowledge to
get out on public roads.
Visit motorcyclemotion.
com.au for more info. Of
course, if you’re not
Victorian or you don’t live
close to Braeside, then
get on your state’s
relevant roads and
transport website and
fi nd an equivalent in
your area.
