thiss-Classofsuvs nowhasa wheelbase 60 millimetres
longerand it’s 77 mm longeroverallas well as 22 mm wider.
withinitsgenerousproportions,it packsthreerowsof
poweredseats, five-zoneclimatecontrol,and the latest
formsofconnectivityfrommercedes.the biggest change is
the 48-volt architecture that forms the nervous system of the
new model, allowing changes to electronics that its
predecessor could only imagine.
The first of these is E-ActiveBody Control.The active
suspensionallowsindividualwheelstobeadaptively
dampedwithinmilliseconds.this improves on-road
dynamics as well as off-road capability. In the new GLS “580”,
Mercedes have introduced their first electrified V8 petrol
engine with EQ Boost. The 4.0-litre V8 has been tuned to
489 PS with a peak torque of 700 Nm. The EQ Boost function
adds 16 kW (22 PS) and 250 Nm in short bursts when needed
for seamless acceleration from the nine-speed automatic
transmission.
The GLS will also have a “450” petrolwith a 3.0-litre
straight-sixmaking367 PS and 500 Nm, with the same
eQboostfunction.there will also be two straight-six
diesels, the 350 d and 400 d, with 286 PS/600 Nm and
330 PS/700 Nm respectively on offer.

somewhatofanevolution.Aimedattheoutdoors,theclose-to-
productionglb-Classwillbringincompactdimensionswithall-
road and even off-roadcapabilities.
theglbwillbepositionedabovetheglA andseemmore
rough-roadorientedthanthelargerglC.theconceptglb
measures4,634 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,900 mm tall with
the roof box. Its long 2,829-mmwheelbasepointsto a big change
inside:roomforuptosevenoccupants.
The ConceptGLB is poweredby the “M260”four-cylinder,
turbo-petrolengine,alsoseeninthenewA-andClA-Classcars,
with 224 PS and 350 Nm. An eight-speeddual-clutchautomatic
drivesthefront-biased 4 mAtiC all-wheel-drivesystem.

The brawnyV8-poweredGLC and its sloping-roofCoupé
twinandtheirhigher-performances counterparts have
been spruced up further. The 4.0-litre biturbo V
continueswith 476 PS or 510 PS in the S, but the big
changesarethenewheadlightdesignand,inside,the
introductionofthembuX interface.it alsopacksthenew
Amgdynamics agility control, among other electronic
enhancements.
