It’s no longer part of iTunes, but sync survives

On the side
The first time you sync a device,
connect it with its USB cable. Once it
appears, you can check “Show this
[device] when on Wi–Fi” and it’ll appear in
the sidebar whenever it’s on the same
network, without a cable.

One at a time
If iCloud sync is active on this
device, the Finder will only offer to sync
content that’s on this Mac but not in
iCloud. A “Remove & Sync” alert refers to
content synced from other Macs; iCloud
content is unaffected.

Inside job
The Files tab still doesn’t offer
a general purpose file transfer facility,
instead just syncing data associated
with individual apps. iCloud Drive is
now generally a superior way to
make files available elsewhere.

HOW TO Sync your iOS device

WHEN THE iPOD was
invented, the only way to
get content onto it was from
your Mac, using iTunes. That ability
to sync from macOS to a connected
iOS device persists, with a Summary
screen appearing when you select the

sync various types of media or back
up your device to the Mac’s storage.
In macOS Catalina, it’s moved to the
Finder — a more logical place.

To sync or not to sync

Direct sync has always been confusing.
The process may remove content as
well as adding it; stick to syncing with
one Mac. iCloud sync, with iTunes Match
or iTunes Music to include your own
imports, may be more convenient, and
you can add your own videos to Photos
and sync via iCloud Photo Library.

JOINED–UP
THINKING
Any iOS device connected
to your Mac will appear in
the Locations section of the
sidebar of any Finder
window, along with devices
on your network. Click it to
show this display, similar
to iTunes’ Summary pane.

MEDIA LITERACY
The tabs across the top let
you sync different types of
content from your Mac.
This method of transfer has
largely been superseded by
iCloud features. However, if
you prefer to do it like this,
it still works the same way
in Catalina.

SAFE STORAGE
As before, you can also
back up your device to
your Mac — handy if you
don’t have enough iCloud
storage space. Make sure
you understand what this
does and doesn’t include
