lies behind the outer edge of the ring
of points and the part of it that was
below the ¼in seam now extends out
past the outer edge of the ring of
points.
4
Fold the 42½in square of
large-scale print fabric in half
horizontally and vertically and press
light creases in it to mark its centre.
Unfold. Pin the centre block on it using
the creases as a guide to centre it.
5
Appliqué the centre block to the
background by machine stitching
in the ditch between the outer edge of
the ring of points and the ricrac using
thread to match the ricrac.
Borders
1
Trim two of the 5in strips of black
and yellow print fabric to measure
42½in long. Sew them to the left and
right edges of the quilt top. Press
seams outwards.
2
Trim the remaining two 5in strips
of black and yellow print fabric
to measure 51½in long. Sew them to
the top and bottom edges of the quilt
top. Press seams outwards. Your quilt
top should now measure 51½in square
from raw edge to raw edge.
3
Group the foundations for Border
2 into four sets, each containing
one Foundation D, four Foundation E
and one Foundation F.
4
Cover the foundations in one set
using the short ends of the 6½in
strips cut from black spot and cream
print fabrics. Use the cream print
fabric for the odd-numbered areas
and the black spot print fabric for the
even-numbered areas — although
note that Chris used a hot pink print
fabric instead of the black spot fabric
in several places. Trim the seam
allowances after adding each fabric.
5
Once all the foundations in a
set have been covered, trim
them back to the outer line of the
foundations. Join them together in
one long strip beginning with the
Foundation D, then adding the four
Foundation E and finishing with the
Foundation F. Gently remove the paper
from behind the fabric. Your border
strip should measure 51½in long.
6
Sew the strip to the top edge of
the quilt top with the base of the
black spot print triangles adjacent
to Border 1. Press the seam towards
Border 1.
7
Repeat Steps 4–6 to make a
second border strip and sew it to
the bottom edge of the quilt top.
8
Then Repeat Steps 4–6 to make
another two border strips. Join
a 5½in square of grey print fabric to
each end of these strips, then sew
them to the left and right edges of the
quilt top.
Finishing
1
Remove the selvedges from the
backing fabric and cut it into two
equal lengths. Sew the pieces together
side by side with a ½in seam and press
the seam open.
2
The quilt top, backing and
batting are ready for a longarm
quilting machine as they are. If you’re
quilting by hand or on a domestic
machine, follow the instructions for
Preparing the Quilt Sandwich in the
free downloadable Basics Guide* to
pin or baste the quilt top, batting and
backing together.
3
Quilt as desired. This quilt was
machine quilted in a variety of
designs and thread colours, using
the printed motifs in the large-scale
fabrics as a guide in those areas.
4
Trim the excess backing fabric
and batting ¼in outside the edge
of the quilt top.
5
Follow the instructions in Binding
the Quilt in The Basics Guide* to
bind the quilt using the seven 3in strips
of multi-coloured strip print fabric with
a ½in seam.
