Preparation and cutting
From the cream print fabric, cut:

  • one strip, 13½in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two rectangles,
    10¾in x 13½in (bag lining). Trim the
remainder of the strip to 12in wide,
and from it cut two rectangles, 7in x
    12in (bag front and back)

  • one strip, 1¼in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two strips, 1¼in x
    11in (outer bag)
From the pink floral print fabric, cut:

  • one strip, 11in x width of fabric. Cross
cut it to yield two rectangles, 6in x
11in (bottom panels of bag). Trim the
remainder of the strip to 10¾in wide,
and from it cross cut two rectangles,
10in x 10¾in (top section of bag) and
    one rectangle, 8½in x 10¾in (inner
    pocket)
From the dark pink print fabric, cut:

  • one strip, 1¼in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two strips, 1¼in x
    20in (patchwork)

  • one strip, 6½in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two strips, 6½in x
    18in (handles)

  • two strips, 1½in x width of fabric
    (ties)

    • one rectangle, 9½in x 10¾in (lining of
      inner pocket)
From the light blue print fabric, cut:

    • one strip, 1¼in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two strips, 1¼in x
      20in (patchwork)

    • one strip, 1¾in x width of fabric.
Cross cut it to yield two strips, 1¾in x
      10½in (casings)
      From the medium-weight fusible
      batting, cut:

    • two rectangles, 12in x 14in (bag front
      and back)

    • one rectangle, 8½in x 10¾in (inner
      pocket)

    • two strips, 1½in x 18in (handles)

If you’re not using pre-cut papers,
trace the shapes for the elongated
hexagon and square from the Pattern
Sheet on to template plastic using a
fine permanent-marking pen and cut
them out accurately on the traced
lines. Use them to trace the required
number of shapes (as shown in the
Materials list) on to stiff paper and cut
them out accurately.

2

To cut fabrics for the medallions
appliquéd to the front and back
of the bag, pin a paper shape to one
of the assorted print fabrics and cut it

out a generous ¼in outside the edges of
the paper. Katrina fussy cut floral print
fabrics for her elongated hexagons to
create extra visual interest.

3

To prepare the shapes, centre a
paper shape on the wrong side
of each fabric shape. Run a thin smear
of water-soluble fabric glue around
the outer edge of the paper template,
then fold the edges of the fabric over
onto it, one by one. If you prefer not to
use glue, fold the edges of the fabric
over on to the paper and use needle
and thread to tack them together at
the corners without going through the
paper. Refer to Diagram 1.

Medallions

1

Each medallion is made from four
elongated hexagons and four
squares using English paper piecing.
Lay out the prepared shapes for one
medallion, alternating the elongated
hexagons and squares. Thread a
milliners needle with fine thread in a
neutral colour and knot it at one end.
Match one edge of a square with one
angled edge of the adjacent elongated
hexagon, right sides together and
edges aligned. Whip stitch them
