Motorcycle
Antilock brakes and
an engine between
300 and 800 cc (cubic
centimeters, the measure
of the engine size) is what
first-time riders should
look for. Buying used will
save money, but right
now is a fantastic time
to buy new. The industry
is working hard to court
first-time riders with cool
bikes and discounts.
Suzuki SV650
The Mazda Miata in
motorcycle form, fun and
light with plenty of power.
Kawasaki Ninja 400
An engine size that makes
it light and reasonably
priced, with a parallel-
twin engine that’s
smoother than single-
cylinder competitors.
Ducati Scrambler
Sixty2
Italian-grade design,
customizable, and packed
with high-end details like
Brembo brakes.

▲ HELMET

EDITOR’S PICK: Shoei RF-1200 ($485)
A majority of head damage from accidents
happens around the jaw, which makes a good
case for a full-face helmet, the kind that has
a visor and chin cover. Always buy one that’s
brand new, because after five years, the
glue inside any helmet loses adhesion. If you
crash, or even drop it, replace it. If that sounds
expensive, know that price does not corre-
late to safety. Any helmet from a name brand
(Shoei, AGV, Bell) with a DOT certification
sticker will likely help save your life. Spend-
ing more gets you better aerodynamics (less
road noise) and more comfortable materials.
Before you buy, find a shop and try some on,
because different brands accommodate dif-
ferent head shapes.

Plan to spend at least $1,000. If that sounds like a lot, pull
from whatever you were going to spend on a bike. This is
worth it. Comfortable protection will save you from injury,
and make you ride more, and more confidently.
