Dedication to Armand Borel
This volume of the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute Lecture Notes is dedi-
cated to Armand Borel. Professor Borel died on August 11 , 2003 , while he was
a Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he had been a
member of Faculty since 1957.
Professor Borel's research covered many fields, including pioneering works in al-
gebraic and arithmetic groups and the theory of automorphic forms. He was a
principal lecturer in the IAS/PCMI Graduate Summer School during the summer
of 2002. The notes for his lectures appear in this volume, starting on page 5.
