Only MIT students can challenge Caltech students’ pranking skills (which our
East Coast brethren prefer to call “hacks”) and choosing just one to single out
was a challenge. While affi xing a Halo Spartan helmet and assault rifl e to a
statue of John Harvard in Harvard Yard is something to be celebrated, the myri-
ad ways students have found to decorate MIT’s Great Dome is most impressive
to us. Over the years, the dome has played host to a fi re truck, propeller, police
car, Zelda Triforce symbol, airplane, block of cheese, beanie, and telephone
booth, but being traditionalists, our favorite remains the reincarnation of the
dome as a larger-than-life R2-D2 (complete with instructions addressed to
“Imperial drones” on how to take the droid apart).DRESSING UP THE DOME
